7 Card Stud was the most popular variation of poker for many years but has been replaced by Texas holdem in most poker rooms. 7 Card Stud is played differently from holdem and Omaha as there are no community cards. Each player receives his or her own cards to form their best hand. Here is a quick guide to the rules and playing sequence.

7 Card Stud is played with 2 to 8 players at a full table. Each player places an ante and then receives two cards face down and one card face up. The player showing the lowest card is required to place a bet to open the betting action for the first round. This bet can be half the lower betting limit or a full bet, called complete. Play continues to the left and each player may fold, call or raise. After the betting is completed, each player receives another face up card and the next round of betting starts. In this and the remaining rounds, the player showing the best high hand starts the action. They can check or bet and play continues to their left. A fifth card is dealt face up to each player followed by a round of betting. Then a sixth card is dealt face up and another betting round follows. Finally a seventh card is dealt face down to each player and the last round of betting starts. The last three rounds of betting are conducted at twice the limit of the other rounds. For example, in a 2/4 game the last three rounds have a betting limit of 4. After the final round of betting, each player remaining in the hand shows his or her hand and the highest five-card hand wins the pot. In the case of two identical hands, the pot is split between the two winning hands.
