Omaha high is an interesting form of poker, closely related to Texas holdem, with one big difference. It is a popular variation of poker with the majority of play based in Europe. Here is a quick tutorial to help you learn how to play Omaha high and the rules of the game.
Omaha high is played with 2 to 10 players. At the beginning of the game, a dealer or button is chosen. The dealer button rotates around the tale one player at a time after each hand. The advantage of being the dealer is you get to act last on each round of betting after the first. The player to the left of the dealer places a forced bet called the small blind, equal to half the big blind. The player to the left of the small blind places a forced bet called the big blind equal to the lower betting limit. In a 4/8 game, the small blind is 2 and the big blind is 4. After the blinds are placed each player receives four cards face down, called hole cards. Starting to the left of the big blind, each player may fold, call the big blind or raise. In a limit game, the raise is a set amount equal to the current betting limit. In a pot limit game the raise can be up to the amount in the pot and in a no limit game the raise can be any amount up to the amount a player has on the table. If the pot has not been raised, the big blind may check or raise when it is their turn to act. Play continues just like a Texas holdem game until the showdown at the end. Three community cards, called the flop, are placed face up in the center of the table and the second round of betting starts to the left of the dealer. Then the fourth card, or turn, is placed face up and the third round of betting starts. Remember that the third and fourth betting rounds are double the first two. In our example above, the betting limit the first two rounds are 4, while it is 8 the last two rounds. The fifth community card, or river, is now placed in the center of the table and the final round of betting is completed.
Each player that remaining in the hand shows their cards and the best hand wins the pot. In the event of two identical five-card hands, the pot will be split. Here is the difference between Omaha and Texas holdem. Each player must use two cards from their hole cards and three from the board. In holdem, you can use one, both or none of your hole cards to form your best five-card hand. In Omaha, you have to use two from your hand, not one or none. If you know how to play Texas holdem, this is the only rule change that you need to be aware of to play Omaha.
