Satellite Tournaments Strategy
The most important thing to realize in satellite tournaments is that there are only so many positions available to win a seat to the bigger tournament, and no other place matters. If it is a single table tournament that only awards one seat to the next round or bigger tournament, then the only thing that matters is winning. If it is a multi table satellite that awards ten seats, then tenth place is as good as first, but eleventh is the same as last. In a satellite tournament, always remember exactly where you need to finish, and work towards that goal.
Solid multi table strategy is what I find best in most satellite tournaments. I will find out how many players entered and determine how much the average chip stack will be when it gets down to the seat awarding positions. I will then make that number my goal. If I find myself ahead of the goal I will tighten up my play considerably to protect my stack. I still look for large advantages early to increase my chip position and it is very important to learn which players are tight enough to allow you to steal their blinds. By realizing who will let you steal their blinds early, you will have a great advantage late in the tournament, as blind stealing can keep you in the tournament even when a cold run of cards hits at times.
Just like in a regular multi table tournament, it only takes one mistake or bad beat to end your tournament. The best players are the ones who are able to keep a high level of concentration throughout the entire tournament. Always remember your ultimate goal, a seat at the next tournament, and play accordingly.
