If you ever watch The World Poker Tour or The World Series Of Poker on television, the odds are that the game you were watching is Texas holdem. Here is a quick guide to help you learn the rules and how to play.

Texas holdem is played with anywhere from 2 to 10 players, with most games played 9 or 10 handed. At the start of the game a player is chosen, usually by drawing for high card, as the dealer or button. After each round, the button is moved to the player to the left. The two players to the left of the button place forced bets called blinds. The first player places the small blind (half the big blind) and the next player places the big blind, which is equal to the smallest normal bet (in a 2/4 game the big blind is 2). Each player then receives 2 cards face down, called hole cards. Starting with the player to the left of the big blind and continuing around the table, each player may fold, call the big blind or raise. In limit play, the raise can only be equal to the current limit (a player who raises the first round of a 2/4 game would place 4 in the pot. 2 to call the current bet and 2 to raise). In no limit play, the raise can be any amount up to and including the amount a player has on the table. When the action gets to the small blind, he/she already has half a bet in the pot so if they call they only have to match the rest of the current bet or raise. After the first round of betting, three cards are placed face up in the middle of the table. This is called the flop and these are community cards. Community cards are cards that are used by all players at the table still in the pot to make their best five-card hand. A second round of betting starts with the first active player to the left of the dealer using the same bet limits as the first round and each player may check, bet, call or raise. After this betting round another card is placed face up in the middle, called the turn. The third round of betting starts at this time with the limits twice the earlier two rounds. In the above example, the minimum bet this round is 4. A final card, called the river, is now placed face up in the center of the table and the last round of betting, using the same limits as the turn, is completed.

After all rounds of betting are completed, each player remaining in the hand shows their hand and the best hand wins the pot. To form your best hand, you use the best five-card combination of your two hole cards and the five board cards. In the event that two players have the identical five-card hand they split the pot.
